OK, I can live without an in-flight movie and free refreshments, but what we experienced went way beyond that. We paid extra to bring a bag that was 1/2 inch over the size limit on the plane with us.
Our bag fit under the seat nicely on the way to the east coast, so we probably didn't need to pay the oversize fee. $$$$$ We sat in the emergency exit row so that we could have extra leg room, but the seats were so uncomfortable that we were tossing and turning the whole way. It was a very miserable experience. The seats DO NOT recline, so there was no way to take our discomfort to a different position.
When we arrived, we actually discussed taking the bus back home (some 2500 miles) due to the pain we were experiencing from the seats on the plane. On the return trip we paid extra ($50 each) $$$$$$ to be seated on the front row where there were larger seats, but these weren't comfortable either. We had purchased Homedics seat pads from Amazon $$$$$, which I highly recommend, and they seemed to help a little. Upon boarding, we were informed that we couldn't have our carry-on items with us during a good portion of the trip, so in effect we had paid extra to not be able to access our laptop and other items.
These were stowed in an overhead compartment several rows away from our seats because the flight attendants had used the overhead compartments near our seats. After we landed, we had to wait for the other rows to disembark before we could access our bags and get off the plane. We also had some luggage checked through, but we (and all the other passengers) had to wait inside the airport for an additional 45 minutes before the bags started coming off the plane.
